Navigli Milano - BW Hotel Cavalieri della corona Malpensa

The Navigli

The Navigli are a symbol of Milan and they give a magic and fairy atmosphere to the city. They are ancient water channels used for comercial uses, which connected Milan with the Maggiore Lake, the Como Lake, the low Ticino and the Po. Their history started in the 1179 with the building of the first channel "Ticinello" and a little after that the birth of the Naviglio grande. Important engineers worked at the project and still now we can admire the innovative system of sluices created by Leonardo da Vinci around the end of the 1400. Today the Navigli keep teh testimoninces of a disappered Milan, with old houses and wash houses, and they are now the heart of the nightlife of the city with a lot of pubs and bars.

Santa Maria delle Grazie Milano - BW Hotel Cavalieri della Corona Malpensa

Santa Maria delle Grazie

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a symbol of Milan, its history is related with one of the most important masterpiece in the world: the Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci. The story started in the 1460, when the count and captain of the Francesco Sforza's milizias, Gaspare Vimercati, gave to the Dominicans a chapel with the image of the Virgin Mary, called "delle grazie", to build a church and a convent. The construction site opened in the 1463 under the guide of Guinforte Solari, but it was with  Ludovico il Moro that the church and the convent assumed the magnificence we can admire today: large semicircular apses, a majestic dome surrounded by colonnades, a beautiful cloister, and the refectory. In the refectory it is conserved the only fresco of Leonardo da Vinci: the Last Supper!

Milano S. Ambrogio - BW Hotel Cavalieri della Corona Malpensa

Cathedral of S.Ambrogio

The cathedral od S.Ambrogio is one of the most old and precious churces of Milan, perfect example of the early Christian catheral. It was founded between the 379 and the 386 a.C. for the will of Ambrogio, the bishop on Milan buried in Milan, one of the Saint mostly venerated from the people of Milan. The church represents a magnificient example of Romanesque Lombard art: it is built of bricks, a poor material coming from local places, and it is the expression of an intense architectonical renovation in the conception of lighting and spaces. The internal keeps precious artistic treasures and in the old crypt of the church there are the remains of the saints Ambrogio, Gervaso e Protaso.
